Bio Sergio Lopez-Rivera

Sergio was born and raised in Spain where he nurtured his roots in art and imaging.  From the age of seven, he started to showcase his talent as an artist with sketching portraits in both pencil and charcoal.

By the age of twelve, he was already “painting” his first faces and soon after, he discover photography, a medium that would transform his understanding of makeup from that moment forward.

He moved to the United States in 1987, at age nineteen, and by 1995 he was graduating top of his class from the Joe Blasco School of Makeup.

Sergio became well known for his well-rounded talent as an artist, taking on beauty makeup for film and television as well as special effects, print and even fashion.

His work has been seen regularly in television with shows like “Felicity”, “Scandal”, “Private Practice” and “How to get Away with Murder”, to name a few.

In 2006, he began working for Shondaland, a production company headed by writer/producer Shonda Rhymes and by 2015, he became the first makeup artist in television to supervise the makeup and hair departments for three concurrent television series.

His film work includes indie cult classics such as “Clockwatchers” and “The Opposite of Sex”.

Sergio’s latest film project is August Wilson’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (Netflix) starring his client, Viola Davis, for which he was awarded the Hollywood Critics Association Award, the Critics Choice Award, the Makeup and Hairstyling Guild Award, the BAFTA Award and the Academy Award for “Best Makeup”.

After living in Los Angeles for over 30 years, Sergio Lopez-Rivera is one of the most highly regarded makeup artists in the industry with a stellar reputation and a list of clients that include Viola Davis, Allison Janney, Kate Walsh, Mireille Enos, Alicia Silverstone, Kerri Russell, Darby Stanchfield, Lisa Kudrow, Toni Collette, Amy Brenneman and Idina Menzel, among others.
