Question: When it comes to makeup…why prep?
Answer: to get the best results.
Here I will share how to prep like a pro… as a Fashion & Celebrity Makeup Artist this is what I do to get the results that I want and that my clients expect.
Consider the prep chef who preps food at a restaurant before the dinner service, painters prep a room before they begin painting, students prep for an exam … you get the idea, the first essential step in creating is prep. The same is true for a makeup artist… you must prep the face to achieve great results.

As a Makeup Artist I always begin my work by prepping the skin. After all skin is the canvas for makeup and this essential step comes before I ever pick up a makeup brush. I am a bit of a fanatic about flawless looking skin and the way to ensure that my client’s makeup will look it’s best and hold up better during a long shoot day is by prepping the skin. This lead me to create my own facial serum: Ultimate Make Up Prep because the reality is that I work with models and actresses with demanding schedules and lifestyles that often take a toll on their skin and I needed a solution. Often I found that the women sitting in my chair had dry, irritated or stressed skin and I needed to find a solution so that their makeup would look flawless before they walked the red carpet or went before a camera. I worked with my chemist to create a facial serum that addresses my needs as a makeup artist to help makeup hold up longer during the day, stay hydrated and fulfill my wish list of bettering the skin over time with active ingredients like Peptides and Antioxidant Vitamins C and E. So it’s a busy little multi-tasker!
Here is where it first began! Initially I made my own facial serum for photo shoots at home… the beginning of Heir Atelier all the way through today, the final product.
Ideally you already have your skincare routine in place that is tailored to your skin type and specific skin concerns. This includes: cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing and sun protection as well as any treatments you use to address your skincare concerns or for maintenance. So the prep step that I am talking about here supports your daily skincare routine and is not in place of it.
Great looking hydrated skin that glows from within is the starting point that I want for makeup and the reason behind prepping the skin first. When skin is well hydrated it is plumped up and the look of fine lines are diminished. It is an approach that is different from primers that contain silicone which add a layer on top of the skin and create a barrier between your skin and makeup. I prefer to enhance the skin itself and use a prep that is designed specifically to enhance the wear of makeup but not create a barrier.
